Death Summary: Gaines died in his sleep from unspecified causes in his home in New York City at the age of 70.
His memorial service took place on June 5th and filled the auditorium of the Time & Life Building over capacity.
Who was William Gaines : William Maxwell Gaines spent his early adult life in the Army as World War II started.
He then became the publisher and co-editor of EC Comics which started out adapting Bible Stories then went on to publish titles like Tales from the Crypt, Weird Science, the Vault of Horror (and other horror titles - sometimes adapting stories from Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft) and his true bread and butter - MAD. EC went under in '56, but MAD was sold and converted to a magazine, but Gaines remained the publisher.
He continued to publish MAD until the day he died. MAD even went on to spawn the still-running sketch comedy show MAD TV.
Tales From the Crypt also became a television show for HBO and drew stories from a variety of EC horror comic titles. It featured The Cryptkeeper, a host not unlike Elvira or Vampira, making silly jokes in the black humor vain. The difference was that the Cryptkeeper was a puppet.
