Death Summary: In 2009 Teddy Pendergrass underwent colon cancer surgery and had complications and had a difficult time recovering. He died on January 13, 2010 at Bryn Mawr Hospital in suburban Philadelphia. Pendergrass was 59.
Who was Teddy Pendergrass : Pendergrass, also known as Teddy P, or Teddy Bear, was an R&B singer and songwriter.
He began his career as the lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes in the 1970s before breaking away for a solo career. Pendergrass' self titled debut album was released in 1977 and made it all the way to #17 on the Pop charts and #5 on the R&B. In total Pendergrass released 20 albums.
On March 18, 1982 Pendergrass was involved in a car accident when the brakes failed on his Rolls Royce. His car slammed into a tree trapping him and his passenger, Tenika Watson, a transsexual nightclub performer whom Pendergrass was a friend of. The pair were stuck in the wreckage for 45 minutes. Watson walked away from the accident with only minor injures while Pendergrass was left paralyzed from the waist down.
In 2006, Pendergrass announced his retirement from the music business. He came back briefly for Teddy 25: Celebration of Life, Hope & Possibilities, an awards ceremony where Pendergrass honored people who had helped him after his accident.
