Ted Stevens

Born: 1923-11-18 - Died: 2010-08-09
Cause of Death:
Plane Crash

Death Summary: Senator Stevens was killed in a plane crash 320 miles southwest of Anchorage, Alaska.

Who was Ted Stevens : Senator Ted Steven's story in Alaska begins in the 1950's, when he found a job in Fairbanks, Alaska with a prominent law firm. He would eventually become the U.S. Attorney in Alaska early on in his career.

He gained a reputation of being a tough prosecutor, coming down hard on crime. Eventually, his work would lead him to become counsel on the Department of the Interior. His time here was spent trying to obtain statehood for Alaska.

His work to obtain statehood for Alaska led Stevens to run for the nomination of U.S. Senate in 1968. He would actually lose the campaign to the well renowned Anchorage mayor.

Due to the death of one an Alaskan U.S Senator, Stevens was appointed to the position in 1968 by the Alaskan governor. After his appointment, Stevens would win his campaigns to be re-elected until his final 2002 run.

On a national level, Stevens became widely known for his appointment to the Internet and network neutrality committee. Here, he gave his speech, famously coining "the internet is not a big truck, but a series of tubes". This statement would go on to be parodied online, and by way of The Daily Show.

Controversy would be the last thing Stevens became known for. In 2008 he was indicted by a federal grand jury, and was found guilty of 'failing to report properly report gifts', which is a felony. All of this tied into Stevens using his political influence to add substantial wealth to his finances.

Later, in 2009 Steven's guilt would be dismissed due to the discovery of the prosecution withholding vital evidence during the trial.
