Selena Quintanilla
Born: 1971-04-16 - Died: 1995-03-31Cause of Death: Murder
Death Summary: In early 1995 the Quintanilla family discovered that Yolanda Saldívar, president of Selenas fan club and manager of her boutiques, had been embezzling money from the fan club and decided to fire her.
Saldívar contacted Selena and asked to meet so she could give her some paperwork for tax purposes. They agreed to meet at a Days Inn on March 31, 1995. When Selena demanded the paperwork Saldívar stalled, and began telling about being raped in Mexico.
Being the kind natured person Selena was, she drove Saldívar to a local hospital where it was found that no rape had taken place. So they went back to the hotel where Selena asked once more for the paperwork.
Selena told Saldívar that she could no longer be trusted, and began to leave the room. At 11:48 am, Saldívar drew a gun from her purse and shot Selena once in the back, critically wounding her. Selena ran toward the lobby trying to get help, Saldívar chasing behind her calling her a bitch.
Before Selena collapsed to the floor, she was able to name Saldívar as her assailant and gave the room number where she was. Once the ambulance arrived they transported her to a local hospital, where she died from loss of blood at 1:05 pm.
Selena was only 23.

Growing up Selena was the youngest child of a Mexican couple in Lake Jackson, Texas. Selena began singing at a very young age, and at the age of six her father founded the singing group Selena y Los Dinos, which Selena fronted. Primarily they group performed at the family owned restaurant, PappaGayo's... but the restaurant failed soon after leaving the family bankrupt and homeless.
With only their instruments and an old bus the family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas. Selena y Los Dinos performed anywhere they could... street corners, weddings, quinceañeras, and fairs. The hardwork paid off as Selena recorded her first album in 1985... though it wasn't sold in stores it did get her name out even more.
When Selena was in the eighth grade her father pulled her out of school, as her traveling schedule had become so hectic. She would eventually earn her high school diploma from The American School of Correspondence in Chicago Illinois.
In 1987 Selena won Best Female Vocalist at the Tejano Music Awards, and went on to win it the next seven years in a row. The following year she released two more albums, Preciosa and Dulce Amor.
In 1989 José Behar signed Selena to Capitol/EMI, a label he founded. He later said he signed Selena because he thought he had found the next Gloria Estéfan.
Around this same time Selena met her future husband, Chris Pérez, who had his own band. A short time later the family hired Chris to play in Selena's band, and the two quickly fell in love. They were married on April 2, 1992.
In 1990 Selena released her next album, Ven Conmigo, which was written by her brother Abraham Quintanilla, III. It was the first female-recorded album to achieve gold status.

I still remember the day Selena was tagically shot, I was in elementary school in the fifth grade. The news hit the whole class really hard and we got together to see the news on t.v. The next day at school we spent the day drawing and make cards for selena.I still can’t belive she’s gone and everytime I listen to the radio and here one of her songs it’s like she’s still here.I was was 10 yrs old then and now I have a 4 yr old daughter and she just loves to listen to selena songs and even though I can’t really underestand what my daughter sings when she sings selena songs, I’m proud to say that selena is still remembered through the next generation and even more to come. Well Selena, it was nice getting to finally know you. I’ve heard a lot about you from my mother and your tragic death, sometimes i wish i was alive in your era; i was born on may 18th 1995, jus a month after your passing and its 2010, guess im a bit late….It started wen i first saw SELENA the movie, back in 2003 or 2004 nd it really touched me and to hear that it was a tru story made me REALLI REALLI SAD even though i do not come from a spanish-speakin background but it is magnificant that their was an example on earth to teach young ones to follow their dream and to be proud of their culture, to me i think that is an ANGEL from god who was called back to him because she completed her duty on earth. I was born 2 years and 2 months after Selena died. I learned about her when I was 5 years old when I heard “Dreaming Of You” on the radio. Since I was a little girl and didn’t know about death, I thought she was still alive and I had big dreams of meeting her. I learned she died when I was 8 and that made me very sad :’( I also found out that my nana (grandmother) went to Selena’s very concert at the Houston Astrodome earlier this year. I also started listening to her Spanish songs this year also and now her song “Como La Flor” is always stuck in my head

Although I’m not really old enough to remember her I fell in love with Selena’s music and kind nature after having watched the movie and having done some research. It’s kind of weird missing someone you didn’t know but it’s still possible. Not only was Selena chosen every year, she was often chosen by more than one student. Selena was a talented singer but it is the person she was that’s elevates her above the rest.
