Who was Sargent Shriver : Sargent Shriver was a famous politician and activist, who was credited as one of the leading forces behind the creation of the Peace Corps. He founded the Job Corps, and ran as Vice President under George McGovern's campaign.

Shriver was born in Westminster, Maryland, the son of Robert Shriver and wife Hilda. He attended Yale where he would receive his Bachelor's Degree, and eventually his law degree. He was an opponent of America's involvement in World War II, but enlisted in the Navy because he felt a sense of duty to serve his country even if he disagreed with the politics.

Shriver spent five years on active duty, eventually becoming a lieutenant. He would be awarded the Purple Heart. Shriver had a close relationship with the Kennedys. He worked as a manager for Merchandise Mart, part of the Kennedy's business empire. During this time he was in a relationship with Eunice Kennedy, a sister of the would be president, John F. Kennedy. Who he would eventually marry

With his law degree, he would practice in Washington D.C., Illinois, and New York, and appear before the Supreme Court. His relationship with the Kennedys would lead to him working as JFK's political and organization coordinator in the Wisconsin and West Virginia primaries. This would eventually lead Shriver to being the first director of the Peace Corps under the Kennedy administration.

After Kennedy's assassination, Shriver continued as Director of the Peace Corps and served as a special assistant to Lyndon Johnson. Under the Johnson campaign, Shriver would create the Office of Economic Opporunity, a key component in Johnson's 'War on Poverty'.

Shriver was credited for founding numerous social programs and organizations, including: the Job Corps, VISTA, Upward Bound, and Head Start. His wife Eunice founded the Special Olympics, and Shriver was active within the organization as well.

In 1972, Shriver was chosen by George McGovern to be his vice presidential running mate. The ticket eventually lost to Nixon/Agnew. However, this run would lead to Shriver going after the democratic nomination for president in 1976. He would lose in the Democratic primary.

After politics, Shriver would continue practicing law. In 1984, Shriver was elected as President of the Special Olympics and would continue his work with the organization going into the 90's.

In 2003, Shriver was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. This would lead his daughter, Maria, wife to Arnold Schwarzenegger, to write a book geared towards kids about the disease.

Shriver is survived by all of his children.
