Who was Sam Walton : Once the richest man in America, Samuel Moore Walton is the founder of both Sam's Club and Wal-Mart.
He came a long way considering that he grew up in the Great Depression struggling to help his family make ends meet.
He eventually joined the Army and supervised security at aircraft plants and PoW camps. He was even a Captain before he was through.
He left the military in 1945 and got into the business of running a store. He first bought a Ben Franklin variety store and began his quest for offering customers low prices. It worked and he went on to open a chain of Ben Franklins and finally opened up the original Wal-Mart in 1962. From there, it just snowballed.

Famous Dead DB Poll
I met Mr. Sam in 1980, I believe it was when the first Wal-Mart store was opened in Opelika. I had been hired to work in the candy and stationary departments. I found him to be very humble and down to earth. He smiled broadly and firmly gripped my hand and asked me how I liked working for Wal-Mart. I told him I loved it. He said, “Good! That’s what I like to hear!”
I did enjoy my job very much. I left after four years to open my own business, but I never forgot meeting Mr. Sam. He was truly an awesome person and I am sure heaven shines a little brighter with him in it.
SAM HAD CREATED A GREAT WORKPLACE, I’M SORRY HE HAD TO GO!
Didnot believe it was true. You are one of my best idols of all time.
