Born: 1934-02-21 - Died: 2010-06-03
Cause of Death:
Stroke

Death Summary: McClanahan passed away in New York Presbyterian Hospital, following a large stroke she received three days prior.

Who was Rue McClanahan : Rue McClanahan is a famous actress most notable for her stint on Golden Girls and performances on Broadway, and Off-Broadway. McClanahan was born in Healdton, Oklahoma; the daughter of a beautician and building contractor. She would attend the University of Tulsa, graduating with honors with a degree in German and theater arts.

McClanahan started her acting career in 1957 with appearances in Off-Broadway shows. She would eventually receive a big break in 1969, by way of the musical, Jimmy Shine. She would act opposite of Dustin Hoffman, who had the title role. A few years later (1972), McClanahan would make her television debut with the TV show Maude. She played Maude's (Bea Arthur) best friend, Vivian Harmon.

After Maude, McClanahan continued her career with the show Mama's Family. Her next big role, and most notable was Blanche Devereaux on the hit series, Golden Girls. The show was an instant hit, following four women in their golden years who lived as roomates in the same house. McClanahan's character was noted for being man-crazed, and highly competitive. Her turn as Blanche earned her an Emmy for 'Outstanding Lead Actress' in 1987. She would be nominated in '86, '87, '88, and '89.

After her long success on Golden Girls, McClanahan would appear in various movies and other TV shows. Her most known work was Madame Morrible, in the musical: Wicked.

McClanahan had an interesting life outside of her acting as well. She was married six times, and wrote a book about her married life titled: 'My First Five Husbands...And the Ones Who Got Away'. In 1997 she was diagnosed with breast cancer, but would eventually fully recover from it. Coincidentally, this was the same year she was married to Morrow Wilson who she remained married to until her death.
