Death Summary: Darwish was 67 years old when he died as a result of complications from open heart surgery, which he had performed three days prior.

Before the surgery, Darwish signed documentation saying that he did not want to be resuscitated in the event of his brain dying.

Three days of mourning for Darwish were declared by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
