Born: 1926-02-11 - Died: 2010-11-28Cause of Death: Pneumonia
Death Summary: Nielsen died in a Fort Lauderdale, Florida hospital from pneumonia. He died in his sleep.
Who was Leslie Nielsen : Leslie Nielsen, an iconic Canadian-American actor appeared in over 100 films, 1,500 television programs, and portrayed over 220 characters during his career. Nielsen was born in Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of a Welsh immigrant, and a Danish father who was a Constable with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
Nielsen started his acting career during the golden age of television, in the early 1950's. He began as a serious, dramatic actor, while also doing voice work for documentaries and commercials. His first big break came in 1956, when he starred in the full length movie, The Vagabond King. This performance led to a role for a movie which has a strong cult following, Forbidden Planet.
After Forbidden Planet, Nielsen became a very sought after actor. He appeared in many dramas, and romantic comedies as the lead role. He would also continue a blossoming television career, which had him appearing on shows such as: Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Virginian, and The Wild Wild West.
Throughout the 60's and 70's, Nielsen would continue appearing in dramas, with his last serious performance coming in 1977, for the film Project: Kill. Then, in 1980, Nielsen received one of the biggest breakthroughs in his career. He had a supporting role in the 1980 classic parody, Airplane. The classic exchange "Surely you can't be serious?" and "I am serious. And don't call me Shirley", has become one of the classic quotes in Hollywood comedies. It was #79 on the AFI's List of Top 100 movie quotes.
After Airplane, Nielsen was called onto play Frank Drebin in the comical TV series, Police Squad. The show played off the stereotypes of hard-boiled police dramas. The show didn't last very long, however, Nielsen received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Although the series flopped, a movie would spawn years later, based on the same character. The Naked Gun released to both critical, and box office success. The movie raked in $78 million at the box office. And Roger Ebert said this of the film, "You laugh, and then you laugh at yourself for laughing."
The success of The Naked Gun spawned two sequels, and led to Nielsen's late bloom of parodies. Many of these movies didn't receive critical success, though they had a strong cult following, and sold well on video. Nielsen made an appearance in Scary Movie 3, which was successful, and led to him appearing in Scary Movie 4. The first sequel he had done since The Naked Gun.
Along with this television, and movie appearances, Nielsen made a few instructional golf videos. He mixed his deadpan humor, with teaching viewers golfing techniques.
Nielsen was married four times, and had two children from his second marriage. Unknown to many, Nielsen had a hearing impairment. He was declared legally deaf, and wore hearing aids for most of his life. Nielsen is survived by his latest wife, and two children.

With a ‘tweek’ towards his own career he was able to survive where most go off the rails. His gentleman’s behaviour in public and wonderful visage on screen will be missed by all. Today’s actors could learn a lesson or two from his career and put the tabloids out of business.
