Lesser was born in New York City. After receiving his bachelor's degree, he served in the United States Army during World War II.
Throughout his career, he amassed a large filmography, appearing in both TV and film. His TV show appearances include classics such as, The Monkees, The Outer Limits, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Get Smart, and The Rockford Files.
Along with his television career he appeared in many classics of cinema. He had a rather large role in the World War II classic, Kelley's Heroes. He would work with Clint Eastwood again in, The Outlaw Josey Wales.
Lesser's more famous roles would come later in his career, on the shows Seinfeld and Everybody Loves Raymond. During the Seinfeld run, Lesser played the character, Uncle Leo. Many of the classic moments of the show came from performances by Lesser. This job eventually led to his recurring role on the show, Everybody Loves Raymond. He played Frank Barone's friend, Garvin.
His last television performance came from the new show, Castle.
Lesser is survived by his two children. His daughter Michelle was present for Lesser's death.
