Death Summary: Kim Jong-il's death was announced by North Korean state television on December 19, 2011. It was announced that Jong-il had died on December 17, 2011 of a heart attack while traveling by train to an area outside Pyongyang. Shortly after his death, King Jong-un was announced as his successor, Jong-il's son, and he is to be known as "the great successor".
The funeral is scheduled for December 28, 2011 in Pyongyang.
Who was Kim Jong-il : Kim Jong-il was the supreme leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, also known as North Korea. He was also the Chairman of the National Defense Commission of North Korea, and the Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army, the fourth-largest in the world.
In April of 2009 Jong-il had North Korea's constitution was amended to refer to him as the "Supreme Leader". During his regin he was also referred to as "Dear Leader", "our Father", "the General", and "Generalissimo".
Jong-il was not required to stand for popular election to his key offices, he was unanimously elected to the Supreme People's Assembly every five years, representing a military constituency, due to his concurrent capacities as KPA Supreme Commander and Chairman of the DPRK NDC.
