
Death Summary: Kay Yow died from stage 4breast cancer on January 24, 2009. She had been on a leave of absence from coaching since early January.
Who was Kay Yow : Yow was the head coach of the North Carolina State female basketball team, a job she had held since 1975.
When she became the head coach at NC State she also coach women’s volleyball and softball, she eventually gave those up to focus all her coaching time on basketball.
Yow was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, it was shortly after that she became active in raising awareness as well as money to combat the disease.
On January 11, 2001, she reached the 600-win milestone with the win over Temple University. A little over six years later on February 5, 2007, she reached the 700-win milestone.
On July 11, 2007 she received the inaugural Jimmy V ESPY Award (named for NC State coach Jim Valvano) for Perseverance. She received a standing ovation.
