Death Summary: John Murtha was hospitalized in December 2009 with gallbladder problems, during the routine laparoscopic surgery, Murtha's large intestine was damaged, causing an infection. Due to this complication, Murtha was again hospitalized and died two days later as a result.

A special election will be held to fill the vacant seat left by Murtha.
