Who was Jimmy Ellis : Jimmy Ellis was the lead singer of the soul band The Trammps, who are best known for the hit single, "Disco Inferno". The single was part of the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever, the second largest soundtrack ever sold.

Ellis was born in Rock Hill, S.C, where he sang gospel and graduated high school. Afterwards he moved to Philadelphia, PA to sing with a couple of R&B groups. Finding his most notable success with The Trammps. The group formed in the early 70's. Their first recording was a remake of a Judy Garland song - "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart".

After their small, early successes, the group went on to sign with Atlantic Records in 1975. In 1977, the album, "Disco Inferno" reached no. 11 on the Billboard pop chart. The song would later go on to be featured in the hit movie, Saturday Night Fever. The soundtrack won the Grammy for album of the year in 1979. The Trammps would receive a Grammy for their work on the album as well.

The Trammps would continue touring all the way up until 2010. Jimmy Ellis took a couple of hiatuses, but stayed with the group during their years of touring.

He is survived by his daughter Erika Stinson, his wife Beverly, a son, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
