Jim Croce
Born: 1943-01-10 - Died: 1973-09-20Cause of Death: Plane Crash
Death Summary: Croce perished in a plane crash less than an hour after finishing a show in Natchitoches, Louisiana. He and his guitarist-friend Maury Muehleisen along with opening act comedian George Stevens were flying to Sherman, Texas and all killed when the plane didn't get high enough to clear some trees at the end of the runway, crashing, upon take off.
Croce was 30 years old, and his next album was to come out the day after his death. That album spawned three hits, and an earlier song of Croce's (and one of his most famous) Time in a Bottle, became a number one hit.
Who was Jim Croce : James Joseph Croce was from Philadelphia, and played in a lot of bands, including one with his wife before finding his true success.
Unfortunately his greatest success, of 4 hits didn't come until after he had died. Before his demise, his biggest hit was Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.

Jim croce music has always touched my heart in a way that no other music ever has.
Sept 20th 1973, to me is the day the music died in my life. I remember to this day the sick feeling I got when I was on m y way to school, and saw the headline about Jim’s death. He would have been a GREAT star. I am disgusted that he has not been enshrined into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, especially when you put him up against some who are in. Get with Hall. PUT JIM IN
What do you mean, he’s not in the rock & roll hall of fame? If anyone, his name should be in lights. It’s just got to be an oversight! The man was sooo!!! talented. I wooed woman to his songs. I danced to his songs. At the time, his music was an integral part of my life. We all need to do something about making sure he is entered in to the hallowed walls of the rock & roll hall of fame.
im love jim’s song it touched much of my hardened feelings about being frustrated and boredom..his songs lifted me up high
I was a big fan of his music back in the day, I was in high school when he was killed & I had the 2 albums that were out at the time which I still have. I still remember seeing him on the Midnight Special back then along with his guitar player. When I hear his music on the radio today it brings back a lot of good memories.
I always loved his songs. They remind me of my father who, sadly, passed away too six years ago. My father sings his songs as if you were listening to the real Jim Croce.
May he and my father rest in peace. I hope they met finally in heaven. :’(
A great songwriter and singer,

I love Jim to this day, started playing guitar and singing after Army in 70, and still go out to this day. Most of the songs I do still are JIMS

WaS a big fan of yours. May you forever rest in peace.
If Jim Croce were alive today,
That mustache of his would surely be gray.
He’d probably have given up smoking those cigars,
Wasn’t he working on a song about selling his guitars?
He’d be living off those royalties
From his commercial hits in the 70’s
Pecans would be his favorite snack
Roller derby’s, rapid Roy, back to back.
From Leroy Brown, and I got a name,
Not enough “Time in a bottle” was his fame.
He’d be doing cameos at the “Top Hat bar and grill”
Now wouldn’t that give Ingrid a thrill?
Maybe Maury could do a show…
Gingerbread, “A song I heard”, I guess we’ll never know……
He’d be so proud of his son AJ
They could have done a show together, I’d love to have seen that day….!
At Folk festivals they would appear
Jim and Maury I would cheer
But, that time on the road had
Had taken its toll….
It should have been worth it
At least that’s what he was told
If only that damn plane had cleared that pecan tree…
If only fate could’ve let him be
I would have driven him to his next gig in Texas, and, I would have done it for free!
Truly Missed
To Jim Croce,
I thought you were a very talented entertainer. I really liked your songs Bad Bad Leroy Brown, I’ve got a name, and you don’t mess with Jim. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. Lisa Weiner
Jim Croce was a very talented man, his music was timeless, heartfelt, and classic. I was only 2 in 73, but at 40 now, I have come to love the music of Jim Croce, I’m sorry he is gone.
Jim’s music touched my heart in the early 70′s. He was then and is still today my favorite musical artist. It still saddens me that he is gone. I don’t shed tears for artists who die as a rule, but when Jim was killed, I cried for days. My late husband introduced me to Jim’s music when we were dating. I fell in love with both of them. When the news hit that Jim was gone, we both cried. He is truly missed. I can’t imagine why he has not been inducted into the hall of fame. In my opinion he was the greatest singer/songwriter of all time. I have all his music on cd and on my computer. He sings me to sleep every night. My 13 year old grandson occasionally comes to me and asks me to play him some Jim Croce. He loves the music as much as I do. It’s timeless.
Jim, you remind me so much of my older brother Michael, he looked like you and sang like you, may you BOTH RIP…Both died too young…BOTH ARE REMEMBERED AND LOVED <3
I remember listening to Jim on the radio, talking about his song “Bad leroy brown”. Jim wrote the song about a real character who a buddy in jail always talked about. “Leroy” came in one day and broke this friend out of prison. Jim remarked “Leroy does exist” After writing the song, Jim was worried that the real “Leroy” might come after him….
I had his beautiful song “Time in a bottle” sang at my wedding….Thanks JIm
Wow, it is quite an honor to be able to sign this! Although I didn’t know Jim Croce personally, I am 37 now and grew up listening to his music with my father whom also passed just about 5 years ago. Jim’s music was incredible, to say the least, and he was a wonderful musician! When my nephew was young, I had him listen to Jim’s music, and he loved it as well. Someday if I ever have a child, they will definitely be exposed to the great music of this man! I hope to someday go to San Diego to visit the bar and restaurant, it is on my bucket list!!! Well thanks again for letting me comment on here. It has been my priveledge, and honor!
Back in the Summer of 1975 when I was 4 years old
out shopping with my mom,was when I heard the song “I Got A Name” that came on the radio of a 1973 Ford Maverick 4 door. That car is long gone but Jim’s music has endured a greater part of my life.
I may not have all 3 albums of Jim Croce, just to own Jim Croce’s Classic Hits has allowed me to relived a part of my childhood for a moment.
Thank You Ingrid and A.J. Croce for keeping the legacy of Jim alive for all of us.

Jim along with Maury simply delivered some of the most beautiful touching music I’ve ever come across. It immediately reminds me of how talented both were and the unfortunate tragedy that befell them. Thankfully we have those great songs and performances to remember them by…RIP

favorite song, iv’e got a name. brings back memories. my wife and i love Jim! Put him in the hall of fame, NOW
Jim Croce and his soft hearted music helped me make it thru some tuf times in my life back in 1973…His music is unique .
Croce’s songwriting could have reach the level of Paul Simon and John Lennon, How can anyone hear his music and not enshrine him in the Hall? He is just as or more worthy than half the people already in. I’m sure his day will come, i guess its true nice guys finish last.
Only the good die young

Such a tragic loss for everyone. We all loved him and just cannot believe that his life was snuffed out so soon. He would have been on his way to super stardom!! We love you!!
Jim Croce was gone for 15 years before I was even born, but I still grew up listening to his music with my Dad. He was extremely talented, in a way that many of today’s artist can only dream about. The music he gave the world has most definitely lived on long after his death, may it never die.
I’m not sure exactly why but this blog is loading very slow for me. Is anyone else having this issue or is it a issue on my end? I’ll check back later and see if the problem still exists.

I really liked Jim Croce’s songs. His love of music will live on forever.
I was introduced to his music, I guess, after his death and fell in love with it. It hit a certain chord with my running away at 13. I decided to look and see if there were anymore albums and found this. I was introduced to Time in a Bottle and so I figured he was already dead at that time. He had some wonderful, entertaining music.
I was only 5 when Jim died. Now I am 43 and I love his music. My father had his 8 track tape; I knew his songs by heart. Im sad, even after 38 yrs….he would of went so far… I listened to his music to help me through my day.

Undeniably consider that that you stated. Your favourite justification appeared to be at the internet the simplest factor to understand of.

I miss you so much but you live on through your tunes! I often cry when I listen to them. I wish you could have been here to live your success. Your son proceeds you with his own genre of music that is incredible! You are missed and never forgotten!
I was born in 1967 and grew up listening to your tunes, when I hear them nowadays, it takes me back to a great time in life. Your life was taken to soon and I’m sad you didn’t get to live your greatest success! I will be using your tune ” time in a bottle” for my 5 th wedding anniversary, I’m only sorry I didn’t use it as my wedding song but it brings tests to my eyes. I now following AJ’s work which has it’s own genre but I can still part of you in your son! Rock on AJ your an incredible artist!
Your Music still lives in our hearts. Your life ended too soon.
