Orthwein owned NFL team the New England Patriots from 1992 to 1993, just long enough to hire coach Bill Parcells. He was also owner when the Pats changed their logo and uniforms. He was considering moving the Patriots to St. Louis, but ended up selling the organization to Robert Kraft.
He did have a part in the relocation of the L.A. Rams to St. Louis. He donated his ownership share of the stadium rights to FANS INc., a non-profit group that convinced the team to go there.
