James MacArthur

Born: 1937-12-08 - Died: 2010-10-28
Cause of Death:
Natural Causes

Death Summary: MacArthur died of natural causes at the May Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.

Who was James MacArthur : James MacArthur is famous for his long run playing Danny "Danno" Williams on the long running show Hawaii Five-O. It seemed as though Williams was destined to be an actor as he was adopted by two legendary stage acting legends.

Born in Los Angeles, MacArthur was adopted by Helen Hayes, and Charles MacArthur. His mom was heralded as being the 'First Lady of the American stage', and his father collaborated on some of the most famous stage comedies of the 20th century.

Though he was born into an acting family, MacArthur was very diversified in school. He played basketball, football, and baseball. He was also the president of his class, took part in Drama Club, and actually rewrote the school's constitution.

MacArthur's first credited role came by way of radio in 1948. His mother had accepted a job for the Theatre Guild of the Air, which also called for the part of a small child. He accepted the role. After radio, MacArthur began his career in live theatre. He would continue these productions throughout the 50's, until he'd eventually be discovered by Walt Disney. During his college years when summer break occurred, MacArthur would star in the Disney movies, The Light in the Forest, Third Man on the Mountain, Kidnapped, and Swiss Family Robinson.

After his stint with Disney, MacArthur made his Broadway debut in 1960 playing opposite Jane Fonda in Invitation to a March. This would be his single Broadway performance. Throughout the 60's, MacArthur stayed diversified, appearing in movies, TV, and theater. His big break would come from his appearance in the western, Hang 'Em High, which starred Clint Eastwood. This role led to him landing Dan Williams on Hawaii Five-O.

MacArthur wasn't originally the cast for Dan Williams, but audiences didn't like the actor who played the character. This led producer Leonard Freeman to look for a new actor. He had seen Hang 'Em High, and asked MacArthur if he'd be interested in playing the character. He ended up staying on the show eleven seasons, and the show stopped airing after twelve seasons.

MacArthur was married three times, his third wife was who he was wed to until he died. He's survived by his spouse, along with four children, and seven grandchildren.

    Dear H.B.Duntz, MacArthur and Family:
I Am Very SHOCKED to hear the bad news of Jim’s
passing. I always ADMIRED him ALL MY LIFE. In 2003 I went to Knoxville, Tennessee to meet him in person at AdventureCon. He thought that I was so kind that he actually put me on his website during the AdventureCon Weekend. I am the person in the black and white shirt standing in front of him at his table in disk# 036. He will always leave an everlasting impression in my mind and never will be forgotten. I have plans to visit him at his grave in Oak Hill Cemetery in Nyack N.Y. for respects and to pray for his mother, father, and sister, Mary as well. LIVE ON JIM.
