Born: 1928-12-13 - Died: 2012-04-08
Cause of Death:
Unknown

Death Summary: Jack Tramiel died on Easter Sunday in California. No further details are available at this time.

Who was Jack Tramiel : Tramiel is best known for founding Commodore International, where his Commodore 64 is widely considered the best-selling personal computer in history.

As a child in Poland, Tramiel's family was transported by German occupiers to the Jewish ghetto in Łódź, where he worked in a garment factory. When the ghettos were wiped out his family was sent to Auschwitz concentration camp. He was selected for a work party, along with his father they were sent to the labor camp Ahlem near Hanover, while his mother remained in Auschwitz. It was reported that his father succumbed to Typhus, but Tramiel believed he was killed by an injection of gasoline. In 1945 Tramiel was rescued by the 84th Infantry Division. Two years later Tramiel emigrated to the United States, where he soon joined the Army, where he learned how to repair office equipment.

With his new found knowledge of office equipment repair, Tramiel bought a Bronx shop to repair office machinery in 1953. He wanted a military sounding name for his company, but Admiral and General were taken, so he settled on Commodore.

After leaving Commodore in 1984, Tramiel acquired the consumer division of Atari Inc. from Warner Communications, which was struggling from the video game crash of 1983. Tramiel would name his new company Atari Corporation.

In 1996 Tramiel decided to sell Atari to disk-drive manufacturer Jugi Tandon Storage, where he joined the board.
