Jack Rockne

Born: ????-??-?? - Died: 2008-08-10
Cause of Death:
Cancer

Death Summary: Rockne passed away at the age of 82 from complications from throat cancer at Sanctuary Holy Cross in South Bend, Indiana.

His funeral would be held at Hickey Funeral Home in South Bend.

Who was Jack Rockne : Jack Rockne is perhaps not as famous as his father Knute, but Notre Dame is all about tradition, and the Rockne name is a tradition in itself.

Jack's father Knute Rockne is widely considered one of the best coaches of American football of all time, and is considered to be the father of the forward pass.

Jack missed his father greatly in the many years that followed his death in a plane crash back in 1931.

Jack served in the marines from 1944 - 1946 and then went on to attend Notre Dame, although he actually transferred to Utah State and graduated from there.

Sorry to hear of Jack’s passing. I knew him at Ft. Walters, Tex. in 1966. We met when I refereed basketball. We had many long enjoyable talks about Purdue and Notre Dame football. I was a parochial kid who grew up loving N.D. Football but went to Purdue.

I could probably write a book about the Conference, well, at least a catehpr in a book.I did write a column for our local newspaper about it, as follows:People Helping People column by Beverly ReedRight Choices, Eloquent Expression, and Fun!We rose to our feet, as if we were one body, to show our appreciation to Jennifer Buchanan, who had wowed us with her insight, humour and versatile musical ability. The musical therapist was the final conference speaker and her presentation was the excellent culmination of a weekend of fun-loving humour and uplifting inspiration. Over 200 Toastmasters from Alberta and Saskatchewan had gathered in the beautiful setting of Canmore, to support their competitors, rejuvenate and fine-tune their communication and leadership skills with the fitting theme, “Summit Up”. The whole weekend was a personal development retreat for me, as I enjoyed the guest speakers, contests, educational sessions and camaraderie.Much like driving through the Rocky Mountains, where each turn can be more breath-taking than the last, it seemed to me that as the weekend unfolded, new heights were reached. Cori (Bartel) Morris, whose curling team earned a silver medal, shared experiences of her journey to the 2010 Olympics, One thought she shared really jumped out and grabbed me. She described an important moment of awareness as her team realized while watching curling videos that they all looked much too serious. She credits this realization for a change in attitude that resulted in the team winning an Olympic medal. They needed to rediscover the enjoyment of the game. She believes that you can’t get to be really good at doing anything, unless you love what you are doing. The excellent quality competitions were amazing, as the nine contestants in the Table Topics contest demonstrated their off-the-cuff creative speaking skills. Very high quality ideals and personal values were incorporated into their responses as they, in turn, answered the question, “If you could be granted 3 wishes, what would they be, and why?” One contestant, although obviously severely disfigured by a horrific accident, particularly impressed me when he immediately shared three wishes, all for the benefit of others, with no thought of himself or his own difficulties. The Humorous Speech Contest was another spirited showcase of personal development as the contestants self-confidently delivered their humorous speeches. One of the contestants, accompanied by her guide dog, presented a humorous rendition of some of her experiences as a blind person. Her positive attitude was a powerful inspiration to many of us in the audience.Another highlight of the weekend was the presentation by Andrew Brash, who described his attempt at climbing Mount Everest in 2006. When they were 200 meters from the summit, he and his team chose to abandon the summit climb in order to save another climber who was near death. The part of his story that struck me the most was his description of the agony of this decision, accompanied by the stark reality of the oxygen-deprived man needing help while on a 8700 meter ridge. They made the right choice. In 2008, he was able to claim a successful climb as he was photographed standing on top of the mountain. As a result of the publicity about the 2006 climb, they had received all sorts of sponsorship, as well as international respect. It is a powerful lesson: do the right thing, and the rest will follow.Like the sparkling snow on the surrounding mountains, humour was sprinkled in throughout the whole weekend. Everyone worked together as a team. It was great to notice the improvement in others as they took on leadership roles. The humour, the focus on values and seeing fellow members overcoming disabilities and stretching their comfort zones made this the best conference I’ve ever attended. It was especially good to get to know fellow Peace Country Toastmasters while traveling to and from Canmore.I am proud to be a part of such a professional organization. We all start at different levels and progress at our own speed, and it’s great to get together and have fun. What makes the organization so special is the idea that everyone is helping each other to accomplish their goals. While it is great to develop your own communication and leadership skills, it is even more inspiring when people can create this reality in other people. What Can I Do?Find a creative way to bring joy to the lives of others.Make good choices, and encourage others to do the same.Come to Toastmasters in Fairview: Wednesday, 7 p.m. Fine Arts Center, 835-4106Strive for balance. Think about the man on the mountain!Notice that humans have a remarkable spirit and strive to appreciate it.
