Her career began when she met Mike Seeger, the younger brother of Pete Seeger, the two formed the group the "New Lost City Ramblers". Also, during this time she partnered with Seeger's wife, Alic Gerrard, to form the duo of "Hazel & Alice".
Dickens was featured in the documentary Harlan County, USA and contributed four songs to the soundtrack. She also appeared in Songcatcher and Matewan.
