Gregory Isaacs

Born: 1951-07-15 - Died: 2010-10-25
Cause of Death:
Lung Cancer

Death Summary: Isaacs died from a long battle with lung cancer in his London home.

Who was Gregory Isaacs : Gregory Isaacs is considered by many to have the best voice in the history of Reggae music. Unfortunately, this title also came with a long battle with drug abuse, and dealing. Even through the struggle, Isaacs was able to create music through four decades.

Isaacs story begins in Jamaica where he was a local star, winning many talent contests. His first recording came in 1968 when he recorded a duet with Winston Sinclair. It was titled, "Another Heartache". Though the single sold poorly, Isaacs would go on to team up with many other vocalists and be in a band called: The Concords.

Isaac's solo career started in the early 70's, and he helped to create the African Museum record label and shop. Through this label he would go on to release many of his early hits, including "My Only Lover".

Isaac's international popularity received a huge boost, when in 1978 he joined with a label belonging to Virgin Records called Front Line Records. During the 80's Isaacs would switch labels numerous times, though many experts believe this is when he released his best music. In 1982 Isaacs spent six months in a Kingston jail, racking up his 27th arrest.

Isaacs would go on to keep recording music throughout the 90's and into the 2000's. His last record released in 2008, and was titled "Brand New Me". Speaking on his drug addiction earlier in life, Isaacs said this, "Drugs are a debasing weapon. It was the greatest college ever, but the most expensive school fee ever paid – the Cocaine High School. I learnt everything, and now I've put it on the side."

Everytime I hear your voice, I drop my head, sway from side to side, lift one arm in the air and receive goosebumps! You are all things reggae, and to know that you won’t be making anymore jams heavies my heart. As a grown man I type this weeping like a child. You have inspired me in everything I do. The only thing that helps me cope is to KNOW that you are jamming with marley in heaven and that brings tears of happiness. May you live forever as the absolute greatest reggae god!!!!!
