Who was Elmer Blasco : Elmer Blasco is best known as the guy who invented Major League Baseball's Gold Glove Award.

Blasco saw the need for such an award for defensive players after years of awards going to just batters and pitchers. He felt like the defensive efforts of players, which are crucial to the sport were being under-appreciated, and did something about it.

Now the award is given out each year to the 18 best fielders, one for each position in both the American League and the National League, and is taken into consideration in hall of fame inductions.
