Death Summary: Don Haskins died on September 7, 2008 at the age of 78 after a bout with a number of illnesses from cancer to diabetes to heart disease.

Haskins is survived by his wife Mary; and sons Brent, David, and Steve. His other son, Mark, passed away in 1994.

Who was Don Haskins : Haskins was the men’s basketball head coach of Texas Western College (now known as the University of Texas at El Paso). He held the position from 1961 through 1999; his tenure included the 1966 season when his team won the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship over the University of Kentucky Wildcats, who was coached by Adolph Rupp.

Haskins is credited with starting the motion, which led to the desegregation of college basketball. The “motion” is when he started 5 African-American basketball players in the championship game against the Wildcats.

The story of how the Texas Western Miners championship can be seen in the 2006 movie Glory Road which starred Josh Lucas in the Don Haskins role.
