Who was Del Martin : Del Martin was a gay-rights activist and was married to Phyllis Lyon on June 16, 2008, in the first same-sex marriage in California when the law allowing such a union was passed.
Martin and Lyons had co-founded the first lesbian political organization in the U.S. - the Daughters of Bilitis. They were also president and editor of The Ladder, and were the first lesbian couple to join the National Organization of Women. They helped form the Council of Religion and Homosexuality in California to help homosexuals be accepted in churches.
