Death Summary: Burton was killed at the age of 24 while on a European tour with his band Metallica, the tour bus hit a patch of black ice and skidded off the road, flipping over.
Metallica front man James Hetfield believed the driver to be drunk, though this was never proven.
Who was Cliff Burton : Though not the original bass player for legendary metal band Metallica, Clifford Lee Burton was the first to make it to album. He recorded with the band for the first three albums (Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets as well as the band's demo "No Life Til Leather") before the accident. He contributed to the writing of many of the songs on Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. His last writing credit was for the song "To Live is to Die" on the ...And Justice for All album.
His final performance was in Stockholm, Sweden on September 26, 1986.
