Bill Walsh

Born: 1931-11-30 - Died: 2007-07-30
Cause of Death:

Death Summary: Bill was 75 years old when he died from leukemia in 2007 after being diagnosed with it in 2004.

He had apparently told commentator Dick Enberg that the cancer was in remission earlier in the year. He had previously not wanted the press making a big deal about it.

Who was Bill Walsh : Bill Walsh was an American football coach, and one of the most highly regarded and widely respected ones to ever be involved with the game.

Of course like most coaches, he got his start by playing the game. He was a running back in high school and played the quarterback, tight end, and defensive end positions in college and ended up coaching in college as well.

He began his pro career as an assistant with the Oakland Raiders in the AFL, went on to the Bengals and then the Chargers. He then went back to coaching in college at Stanford before going to the NFL in 1979 where his true legacy began as the San Francicso 49ers head coach. He would be the one who drafted Joe Montana and Jerry Rice to name a couple and won 3 Super Bowls.

Wikipedia has an excellent diagram of Walsh's coaching influence on other well-known coaches here.

  1. Judith LeSueur Says:

Mr. Walsh was our football coach at Washington Union High School in Centerville, which is now part of Fremont, CA., in 1960. We just had our 50th reunion, and we saw his picture in the yearbook. He drove several of the senior girls gaga because he was so good looking. We wish he could have been there with us, he will always be fondly remembered.
