He than declared himself president and remained in power until 1990. He remained as head of the army until 1998, when he was declared senator for life.
In the same year he was arrested in europe on human rights charges, and subsequently also charged in chile.

Hola,la verdad que los meodis en Chile han repasado la vida de Pinochet, el golpe de 1973, el posterior gobierno, la constitucion de 1980, el caso Riggs y todos los procesos judiciales en su contra. Ademas se han registrado las celebraciones de algunas personas que parecen no perdonar ni a los muertos. Y tambien las muestras de pesar de otro segmento de la poblacion que cae un poco en la idolatria. Yo soy de la generacion que nacio pos 73 (78 especificamente) y me toco cantar el himno nacional todos los lunes en la escuela. Sin embargo, creo que el mayor juicio lo hara la historia en base a los aciertos y desaciertos del mentado gobierno militar. Uno puede estar de acuerdo o no con su figura y su gobierno, pero es bien desatinado andar celebrando su muerte, mal que mal cuando fallecio gladys marin, gente de todas las vertientes politicas presentaron su pesar y un sincero reconocimiento a su coherencia.Yo soy periodista y creo q los meodis mas que fiscalizar tendran que mostrar todas las aristas de este personaje, esa es la mejor forma en que las nuevas generaciones podran avistar un Chile sin odio de por medio.El deceso de Pinochet es el cierre de un ciclo complejo y duro para el paeds, ojala los politicos y algunas personas mayores se den cuenta que un segmento de la poblacion (las generaciones posteriores) ya se canso de esta odiosidad y dimes y diretes y de echarse la culpa mutuamente.
