Death Summary: Andre The Giant died in his sleep in a Paris hotel room from congestive heart failure

Who was Andre The Giant : Andre the Giant has been referred to as the "Eight Wonder of the World", due to his immense height and weight. He was billed 7'4" and 500 lbs. He was the first inductee into the WWF Hall of Fame.

Andre "The Giant" Rene Roussimoff was born in France, being of Bulgarian and Polish descent. He was born with what is referred to as gigantism. Andre began his young adult life as a farmer and eventually got involved in woodworking. At the age of 12 he was 6' and 240 lbs.

When Andre turned 18 he moved to Paris, France, where he began training as a wrestler. He trained at night, while working during the day trying to make a living. Andre's original wrestling moniker was "Geant Ferre", from the name of a mythical French giant.

He was discovered by a Montreal promoter and wrestler, and began to showcase Andre in England, Germany, New Zealand, and Africa. He eventually made his way to Japan, where he had a long lasting career. It was in Japan where he discovered he suffered from acromegaly, a hormonal disease which can lead to many health complications later in life.

During the 70's, Andre's popularity began to lessen. He was so big it was becoming difficult to promote matches that were intriguing. His promoter then reached out to Vince McMahon Sr. , who owned World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF). McMahon suggested changes that eventually led to the creation of "Andre the Giant", which most Americans know him as.

Originally, Andre was introduced as a face (good guy), and was a fan favorite while wrestling for the WWWF. Andre's first major rival was with the wrestler "Big John Studd". The rivalry would continue for years, until Andre turned into a heel (villain.

In 1987, Andre began his rivalry with Hulk Hogan which culminated into the legendary Wrestlemania III match. The two had wrestled prior to this match in 1980, but not on the scale of Wrestlemania III. Their match is considered one of the greatest of all time, ending with Hogan bodyslamming a then 520 lbs. Andre the Giant.

Andre the Giant would continue wrestling into the late 80's but due to his health would have to stop. He also became an actor as well, with his most popular appearance being Fezzik in "The Princess Bride".

In 1993, Andre the Giant was the first wrestler inducted into the WWF Hall of Fame. This was also the same year of his death. He had one daughter, who he was survived by.

Andre the Giant was the greatest wrestler I have ever known. My husband talks to me about him all the time and I always watched him as a kid myself. Andre the Giant is greatly missed by everyone who known him

  4. Luis Says:

I remember sneaking a peak while my uncles stayed up and watched wrestlemania 3 I was a kid and was suppose to be in bed but back then those ppv events didn’t come around so often. He was the giant and I because of that he never got his fair share ofcourse you want the hulk hogan the face of the wwf to bodyslam the giant something that no one would ever think was possible. Without the giant there is no hogan without being able to defeat the largest athlete in the world who would he be. I can’t imagine being so big and having your body take the kind of beating his took. He was a big man with a bigger heart he showed his gentle side in the princess bride breaking down doors and catching buttercup big part of my childhood died with him

  5. heavy metal mom Says:

  9. 2 dolla Says:

I witnessed it first hand. I had to unplug the toilet one day for him at the holiday inn in Boston. Perhaps my lowest moment in history. It had to 4 inches wide and two feet long it broke in half and plugged the bowl. I we’d a huge screwdriver to break it up. I wept softly and was truly in shock for months after the incident. My friends say I have PTSD from it. If I here a loud toot or see a big guy go in a men’s room I panic. He must have eaten a lot of meat. I mean a ton of meat because it was dense and rubbery. I should have put it in a glass case but who knew.
